Saint Andrew’s Ball
If you did not attend, you will have no idea what you missed, a Ball and a party all thrown into one night. Everyone who attended was there to really enjoy themselves, and they did, from the first dance, called by the lovely Doreen Wilson, to the Auld Lang Syne, it was a great night.
For those who have attended previous St. Andrew’s nights at the Four Seasons will know of the excellent service, the succulent food, and the general warm feeling of a hotel who wants us to really enjoy ourselves, and can provide the setting for us to do so. So well done The Four Seasons, you have excelled again.
On to the night, after the meal and the toasts to the Queen, the President and people of Cyprus, and absent friends, the festivities began. Everyone had dancing shoes on, and even if this was their first Scottish dancing evening, almost everyone got up from the beginning. Some dances were so over subscribed; the floor would have been too crowded to hold us all.
Doreen did so well in controlling all this on the night, and on numerous other nights, she well deserved every flower in the bouquet presented to her by the Chieftain’s wife Georgie Kennedy, well done Doreen, you are a star.
We had several interludes, taken up firstly by Jim Herd on his Guitar, singing a medley of auld Scottish favourites. After which he was joined by a few members who were willing to exercise their vocal cords, and entertain the very receptive audience,
Ed Findlay as usual was very retiring and had to be forced onto the stage. Pat (Bronco) Lane, using a microphone for the very first time, did extremely well, and bonnie wee Breda Austin did a fantastic job of blending in with a couple of beautiful Irish songs. (They are Celts like us, it is allowed)
We also had our usual raffle, with some great prizes donated both by members, the Society, The Four Seasons Hotel, Chasers Bar in Limassol, and a very welcome two cases of Famous Grouse donated once again by Stelios from ACM
Christophides. In addition a very special prize that came from Andrew Darling, which turned out to be a Scottish passport, which was won by Angela and Andy Campbell from the Surf & Sun Bar & Restaurant in Limassol. They said that it will be framed and put up on the wall of the bar.
Stelios of ACM Christophides has been so consistent with his donations of whisky to the Society’s functions he deserves a special mention, and if any member is ever in the industrial site in the Ypsonas area, look in to his warehouse, you will be given a warm welcome, and a chance to peruse his fantastic stock of whisky, wine and other spirits, it is so good we have nicknamed it “The Sweetie Shop” enough said.
After Auld Lang Syne, the diehards sat around until the wee hours, probably trying to calm down after so much activity, still being served by the excellent staff,
We, that is Lily and I, stayed the night in the hotel, along with several other members, and we were extremely pleased with the service and treatment we received, altogether we can declare this another successful evening. Well done Scott, and his committee, you all worked hard to achieve this, and it was worth it.
