The Summer Ceilidh:
A Beautiful Night in Akgrounda
By Ken Watson
The Summer Ceilidh was held at The Parko Taverna, which was a new venue for us but which turned out to be an excellent choice.
The venue is in a new park set in the valley above the dam and is reminiscent of those community parks you get in Central France, put there for the benefit of the villagers, with a small restaurant and dance floor among the facilities.
As the Ceilidh had to finish by midnight the band didn’t mess about in getting tuned up and the sound system into operation with the help of Eddie Findlay our sound engineer and resident Skelpit Lug Roadie.
Skelpit Lug were in their usual fine form for the dancing and once again thanks to Doreen Wilson for calling the dances, which keeps people like me with two left feet from damaging the other dancers.
The food was excellent and plentiful and the family who run the restaurant were saying how much they enjoyed the evening because of the music, the kilts and the dancing which was so different from anything they had experienced before.
We also had some of the teenage boys from the village hovering about studying this event.
Something like that back in the UK would have you wondering at what time the mugging would start. However, soon the teenagers were joining in with the dances.
One of them who was a particularly good dancer and quick on the uptake was “decoding” Doreen’s dance instructions for his pals. So” a nice wee rainbow moment” as an addition to the evening.
